ABOUT GAME

Rock out is a rhythmic rock music-based mobile game that challenges players to tap and swipe along with the rhythm of their favourite songs and bands. The game features an extensive library of music, multiple difficulty levels and play modes and instruments to accommodate players of all skill levels. In addition, Players can compete against others on global leaderboards by choosing Drums or Guitar to crush the leaderboards.

The game was released with positive reviews, but it gathered mixed reviews in the long run. To address this, I was tasked with wireframing new mechanics, enhancing the gameplay experience and redesigning the UI to create an engaging and user-friendly experience.

WORKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a UI/UX designer for the Rockout mobile game, my responsibilities included:

  1. Conducting User Research: To understand the target audience's musical preferences, play styles, and preferences for mobile games.
  2. Defining User Personas: To represent the potential users who will play the game. This will help me understand the users' motivations, goals, and needs for playing a music-based mobile game.
  3. Creating Wireframes and Prototypes: Using wireframes and prototypes to test and refine the game's rhythm-based gameplay mechanics, ensuring that the controls are responsive and intuitive.
  4. Designing the User Interface: Designing the UI, including the layout, colours, and typography, to create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing experience that fits with the game's musical theme.
  5. Ensuring Accessibility: Ensuring that the game is accessible to users with disabilities by following accessibility guidelines and testing the game to ensure that the rhythm-based gameplay is accessible to all users.
  6. Iterating and Improving the Design: Continuously iterating and improving the design based on the team’s feedback to ensure that game meets the users' needs and preferences for playing a music-based mobile game.

Since it is one of the best games from 20 below games, fulfilling these responsibilities was an absolute challenge. I wanted to make sure that my passion came through in this project by creating a very polished end product.

TOOLS AND SOFTWARE

Throughout the Project, I used various tools based on the requirements

  1. User Research Tools: To gather data and insights about user behaviour, preferences and pain points, I used tools such as surveys, interviews, user testing, and software like Notion and Trello to keep track of my work and Jot down key notes
  2. References and Sketches: After gathering the required information, I started collecting references from similar games, and after doing a competitive analysis, I started doing Rough sketches on paper to prototype new features rapidly
  3. Wireframing and Prototyping Tools: Once the sketches fell in shape, I went ahead to create low-fidelity prototypes and test menu flows using Figma
  4. Design and Collaboration Tools: To collaborate and share design assets, the team used tools like Trello and Slack and google drive.
  5. High-Fidelity Mockups: For the most part, I used photoshop to create high-fidelity mockups and kept iterating them based on user research done with the help of friends, but sometimes, I used Illustrator to create art which varies in scale
  6. Visual Flow and Working Prototype: Once the UI Design is finalised, I brought everything back to Figma to create a Visual User flow for the programmer to understand the layout and integrate them into Unity
