Project Focus

After being presented to design a health infographic, I wanted to create an infographic depicting how teenagers can get a better nights sleep. With a target audience of teenagers, I knew that the design of my infographic was going to have to be mainly based on the visuals, therefore full of illustrations, minimal writing and a strong, consistent colour scheme. For this task, I have been designing an infographic explaining how teenagers can get a better nights sleep.

The Process

As every project should begin, I started by researching facts and figures about sleep, how a lack of sleep can affect the body, how many hours everyone should be getting etc… the list goes on. I find researching topics like this to be very interesting. I love finding out new random facts and having them in my back pocket to strike a member of my family with some irrelevant new information. Once I had collected all of the statistics and facts I found to be relevant to my focal audience, I began to create a hierarchy, to help me organise how it should be laid out for the infographic.

Creating the icons

Next I grabbed the holy grail tool… the sketchbook. Now when I look back on these sketches, I’m sceptical about inserting them here, especially when I claim to be a good illustrator… but anyway, trust the process.

After sketching I used Adobe Illustrator to create these bad boys…

Obstacles tackled

The infographic itself took a couple of attempts. I continually reviewed it until I was happy with the layout. Here’s my first attempt…

A little unfinished, untidy and not up to scratch, but like I said before… trust the process. I think it’s important to step back from it for a day or two, come back review it again and see how I can progress it further. I am actually really proud of how it looks, there are just a few refinements I need to work on and maybe change the text distribution a bit.

Reflection

To see what improvements I could make on my infographic, I decided to ask my sister and my friend their opinion. My sister is 16 and friend is 19, so the infographic is very relevant to both of them. They both were really interested, especially by the percentages and statistics. That is the strong point of my infographic. I think I have presented the data in a great way and it is well organised. Both of them told me that I done a good job at keeping the design relevant for my target audience. I also got some feedback from Paul about my infographic. He really liked it and said that the layout was very strong. All I need to work on is the bottom section which I think I rushed a little. There are also a few bits of text which are a little difficult to read for the icon set. A bit of adjusting of text and maybe more data for the bottom section and it should be almost complete.
