Homework for this week

PART 1

My experiments this week involved filming Kanami Kusama, a performance artist, in Washington Square Park over a period of four days. I haven’t edited anything together yet but have posted some of the dailies/raw footage here:

2/08 Clips

2/10 Clips

2/12 - Slow Motion footage

What I found interesting about filming Kanami in the Park was observing the responses of those witnessing her public performance. Some observers have become avid fans, others are clueless about what they are witnessing, some are awestruck, and others dismissive.

I haven’t quite figured out what we will be doing with the material yet but whatever I capture I share with her. I still have more clips to post that exhibit the beginning of her ritual in endurance performance.

PART II

My Joseph Cornell box representation reflects my relationship to creating - stitching pictures, words, bodies in motion, technology, and machines to structure or deconstruct stories. The characteristics of Cornell’s boxes include - scale, texture, and disparate. I used those characteristics and metaphors to create the box.

Elements - text, contact sheets, film strips, video tape, cut outs, conductive thread and fabric, led, battery, sewing machine, box labeled “La Casa.” Text on the surface of the machine - Doc Feast, In Search, shooting scenarios

PART III

I don’t know what my thesis will focus on yet. But, I am interested in deconstructing documentary form - whether that is through combining live components with film or installation or interactive.

Artists and Projects I admire that I feel fall into this area are:

  1. **Jackie Sumell’s “Solitary Gardens”** and “The House That Herman Built”
