<aside> 📌 GOOD AND EVIL
Good and evil are notions of obscure origin - opposites, the difference between which is often hard to establish in practice. Some philosophers, for instance, have defined both as the pursuit of self-interest.
Everybody, at all times, is able to identify practical reasons for action. But there are scruples strong enough to override practical considerations. It is possible that random, or consciously arbitrary, rules distinguishing “right” (which yields good results) from “wrong” (which yields bad ones) may have preceded any attempt at formulating a moral code based on ethical principles. The rules involved in food taboos and incest prohibitions seem to be examples. Yet belief in a universal ethos or standard of judgment, by which as a matter of principle, good can be distinguished from evil, is so common among humankind that it is likely to be of very great antiquity. In most societies’ origin myths, it is represented as one of humankind’s earliest discoveries or revelations.
