Today, we'll be examining how people all around the world are trying to fix that! When something is sustainable, that means you can keep doing it for a long time and nothing bad will happen. So, sustainable agriculture is farming in a way that keeps our world healthy!

The Game

Today, you'll be playing a game by national geographic called Top Crop. Top Crop let's you work your own sustainable farm! This will help you understand the the challenge of balancing farming that's both good for the environment and can make enough food for us to eat.

The goal of this game is to make the most crops in an eco-friendly way in 10 rounds. This game focuses a lot on technology. Sometimes, that technology is automatically given to you, but sometimes you have to do clever things to get that technology to work for you. It's pretty fun! Follow this link to get to the game.

Please note: this game is for ages 12-18, so there might be some words you don't know if you are still in elementary school. It might be helpful to write down these words and ask a parent later! To help you figure this out, read through this whole page before you start playing.

Instructions

There will be four slides of directions to give you a short introduction to the game when you push start. It will go into some more detail about what you read above, so make sure to read it! Don't miss the goal and the nice information about sustainability below it.

When you're done with that, click on the corn icon in the left part of the screen and plant your first crop. How exciting!

On most rounds, the game will make a few things go wrong. You'll have to use technology to fix that! Once your crop is fully grown, you can harvest it by clicking on the corn icon hovering over the field! You will see your harvest results.

Now you have 8 points to spend in the shop!

You can decide to keep planting corn or to purchase some other crops with the points which you earn every round. This option is in the bottom right corner.
