About the Project

This project was created for our first-year design course. As a team, we worked together to research, organize, design, and model a smart bin design that could be use to prevent the contamination of recyclable and organic material.

What makes our bin special?

Bins that are completely automated are convenient and are a reliable way to prevent contamination. However, we recognized that such bins may end up reinforcing poor trash sorting habits, which would ultimately work against our goal.

In our trash bin design, we offer both convenience and trash-sorting education. Our bin is designed so that users still have to think about how to properly sort their trash. If they end up sorting the trash incorrectly, the bin will detect this, inform the user, and sort it to the correct compartment.
