<aside> ☀ Happy Monday Ecowarriors! This week you’ll be learning about systems and how they function here on Earth! But first, we have to answer one question: “what is a system?”

Today, we’re going to learn about systems! Wait - I’ve heard the word ‘system’ before, but what does it mean? Let’s play a fun game to find out!

Puzzle Game

Click the link here and complete this online puzzle. If you want, you can use the “preview” and “shadow” buttons at the top to guide you as you solve the puzzle. Please avoid the button labeled “solve” -- that takes all the fun out of it!

If you want to do the puzzle in real life and not on your computer, you can print out the image attached here and cut along the gridlines. You may notice that one rectangle is greyed out -- this rectangle is in the correct spot already.

Tip: start with the greyed out rectangle in the bottom right corner and work your way out to solve the puzzle. You can check your work against the following photo:

System Explanation

So how did doing that puzzle help us figure out what a system is? Well, a system is a group of different parts all working together as one whole.

This puzzle is a perfect example of a system because each individual piece comes together to make the whole map.

This week of lessons on Earth systems is also a system: all the individual days work together to teach you about our planet. You can see this by how, on the map, all the days (M, T, W, Th, F) are connected by a single path.

This week, we’ll be learning about the systems of the natural world around us. Let’s start with a quick video. Please watch this video and come back:

Did you catch that? The Earth can be broken down into four main systems: the atmosphere (all the air on earth), the hydrosphere (all the water on earth), the geosphere (all the rocks and dirt on earth), and the biosphere (all the life on earth).
