What are Decentralized Exchanges (DEXes)?

Decentralized exchanges (DEXes) are platforms that allow users to trade cryptocurrency directly with each other. Unlike centralized exchanges, DEXes do not require a central authority to hold or manage user funds. This fosters full transparency, as all transactions are recorded on the blockchain. DEXs also enable users to maintain control of their private keys and thus their funds by using smart contracts to execute trades, whereas with centralized exchanges, the exchange controls the funds.

History of Decentralized Exchanges (DEXes)

All of the main concepts emerged on the Ethereum chain. Initial DEX on Solana was Serum, which pioneered and they were using the orderbook model. CPMM concentrated liquidity (key concepts introduced). Orca took these concepts and brought it to Solana. One thing people that misunderstand is, although essencial concepts of AMMs were from Uniswap, actually implementing it on Solana is much harder than people assume. For Orca specifically their were able to launch in March 2021. Another big thing Orca pushed, their code was open sourced, their concentrated liquidity model was also open source (March 2022).

Ethereum's Pioneering Role:

The core concepts of decentralized exchanges (DEXes) can be traced back to early iterations to around 2014 being Ethereum the blockchain which this concept was firstly implemented. Pioneering DEXes like Uniswap, launched in 2018, popularized the Automated Market Maker (AMM) model, which uses liquidity pools instead of traditional order books. This innovation addressed limitations of earlier DEXes and made them more user-friendly.

Solana's Innovations:

A relative newcomer, the Solana blockchain gained rapid traction due to its speed and scalability, offering a significant competitive advantage over Ethereum at the time. This paved the way for Solana's entry into the DEX landscape with the launch of Serum in 2020. While Serum adopted the familiar order book model, providing an alternative to Ethereum's AMMs, Solana also witnessed the emergence of another key concept: Concentrated Liquidity Provision (CPL). This innovative approach allowed liquidity providers to concentrate their holdings on specific price ranges, potentially increasing their returns.

Orca DEX pioneering innovation:

Orca is the leading DEX on the Solana landscape as of today for the last 4 years. It was launched on March 2021 and managed to capitalize on these advancements. It incorporated the AMM model, likely inspired by Uniswap's success, but implemented it specifically for the Solana environment. One of the noteworthy contributions also coming from Orca was its commitment to open-source development. By making their code and the concentrated liquidity model publicly available in March 2022, they fostered transparency and collaboration within the Solana DeFi ecosystem.
