Running a 1:1 can be tricky, especially if you're new to the whole management game.

In order to help ourselves (and let's admit it - mostly our founders), our instructional designer Joshua has developed this framework. It helps you dive deeper in your 1:1s, while also keeping a good handle on time.

This will allow you to throw away awkward small talk, and cut to the chase - so you can focus on what's most important: having solid relationships at work.

Let's dive in.

1. It starts with quantifying (10 mins)

Like all good things in life, everything is made up of data. Step 1 is to ask your team member how they're feeling in that moment using this nifty little scale. We use Miro for documentation - we've prepared a template for you here.

For best results, prepare two sticky notes: 1 for you, 1 for your direct report. Take a few minutes to plot yourselves on the scale:

Why?

Our emotions control a lot of what we do - from our mood to our reactions. So instead of guessing, you'll know how your team member is entering the conversation.

(Sidenote: Have you ever seen this happening? 😱 )

There are days when two people's emotions are WAY opposite one another's, which can easily lead to frustration, anger, and misunderstandings. Getting a pulse on each other's emotions early on (before you start the conversation) prepares you for a productive conversation.
