According to Statistics Canada, over six million immigrants have moved to Canada since 1990. They have contributed to Canada’s economy, cultural dynamics, and fundamentally shaped the country’s growth.
However, immigrants, especially those with limited English proficiency(LEP), experience challenges in receiving quality healthcare services due to language barriers. Research has shown that language barriers can undermine a patient’s self-advocacy skills and hinder their comprehension of instructions from their health care providers, which can potentially lead to clinical consequences.
How might we help people with limited English proficiency in Canada receive quality healthcare despite language barriers?
Medinterpret is aiming to help LEP patients find professional medical interpreters based on their needs. It aims to streamline the process in which the users are allowed to personalize their requests, make informed decisions, and communicate directly with their choice of interpreters.
In order to deeply understand the problem space, both primary and secondary research were conducted. I was able to discover the main obstacles documented in the current literature and gain insights from talking to the targeted user groups. These are the foundations that assisted me in exploring potential design decisions later on.
