After I sketched a few wireframes, before I began moving to digital, I first of all, had to research fonts and typography to use. There were four types that caught my eye. I will include the other three fonts at the bottom of the page.
But after some thought and comparisons, I decided to use Silka as its clear, clean design allows for legibility at almost any size. It is ideal for text as well as logos. This was the type of font that I needed. I wanted a font that would portray a professional, yet honest and respectable tone like that seen on health service websites, like the NHS. Above all this, it had to be easy to read for all audience members and well suited for VR. Silka is a new geometric sans serif, but Silka takes a new look at geometry and it looks more contemporary.
According to freefonts.io, “A minimal contrast of strokes, a closed aperture and geometric shapes of characters manage to express a neutral and clear typeface.”
The image above is a good example of how it is used - white text with a dark background. I plan on using a similar colour scheme for my project, not white or black however, as these colours used in VR can be quite blinding or overwhelming to the user. I discovered this while I was conducting research. Instead I will use a darker white for text and the background will be a dark grey colour, to help with this issue. By conducting some user testing down the line will determine whether this correct.
Avenir is a geometric sans-serif typeface. The word Avenir is French for "future". As the name suggests, the font family takes inspiration from the geometric style of sans-serif typeface developed in the 1920s that took the circle as a basis, such as Futura. Avenir was intended to be a more organic interpretation of the geometric style, more even in colour and suitable for extended text. This was the first font family I came across while researching, as I thought it would appear suitable for VR. Out of all the four fonts, this one would be my second favourite font to use. However, Silka had the edge over Avenir with the thicker stroke a geometry.
Tiempos Text is a serif typeface. It began as an offshoot of Galaxie Copernicus font but ended up evolving into its own family. The design was heavily influenced by Times New Roman, especially in the italic variant. For this reason, it wasn’t chosen to be in my brand. However, it would look good in conjunction with another font, but I wanted to prevent doing this if I could, as using too many fonts is risky and overcrowding.
