This novel starts as a classic, vapid romance but quickly evolves into a psychological thriller as our protagonist's schizophrenia starts to emerge and reshape our perception of the narrative. The author attempts to portray the protagonists' mental illness as another character in the story, sometimes with great success, but more often in a way that feels forced and confusing. While execution fell a tad short of its potential, I felt that this debut novel did an excellent job of subverting romance novel and thriller tropes, while highlighting the hypocritical societal stigma against mental disorders.
