Early humans knew nature well, so it is not surprising that they tried to control it. Magic was one of the earliest and most enduring ways they devised. There are two distinct thoughts in the idea of magic: first, that change can be effected by causes invisible to experience but accessible to the mind; secondly, that a mind aware of these causes can invoke and apply them. Access to the unseen bestows power over the palpable.
