Summary of findings
- In terms of functionalities, Google Pay is way ahead of the competition, offering many features for users to keep track of their spending, as well as offering the option to link bank accounts to see all the spending in one place. Many features can be very useful to users, such as searching transactions and adding receipts from Google Photos.
- Considering the indirect competitors, these apps are focused on budget planning rather than making payments. It's worth mentioning they present many useful features: tracking regular bills for overcharges, offering better deals on broadband or energy suppliers, providing spending insights, setting money on a savings pot automatically by rounding up transactions, and many more.
- In 2019, Apple released Apple Card, designed to be used together with Apple Wallet. It's a Mastercard credit card, with interest rates that offer a centralised view of spending, activity and cashback on transactions. However, the service is only available in the US at the moment and can only track transactions made using Apple's own card.
