Elevator Pitch

⚡ Our goal with this app is to create a more comfortable / less intimidating environment for university students to interact and network with their classmates. By breaking the ice through questions, games, and discussion forums relevant to the class content but without the pressures of academic credit, students can engage in low-stakes conversation with peers with similar interests/goals to form groups for class/independent projects.

About the project

💡

Inspirations: Our research showed the significance of social anxiety in the higher educational context — 25.8% of college students struggle with social anxiety. From our team’s personal experience of being in large design classes that are graded primarily on group projects, we know that when students start this kind of class without anyone they already know they work well with, finding a team with similar goals or work style ideologies is a stressful process.

💡 Deliverable: Primarily, our app functions to break the ice and start conversations among classmates about common interests, background, and ideas, and then further form groups with people they felt their opinions or styles aligned with. The deliverable functions as a prototype demonstration of the UI of the app, which we imagine embedded into Canvas as shown in the file, to seamlessly integrate into the existing systems classes and students already use.

💡 How we built it: We used a FigJam for the planning process, Procreate for the UI sketches, and Figma for the design and prototype.

💡 Challenges: Time management! We’re just 3 people in our team and don’t have a lot of design experience, so some parts of the actual interface design was rushed, and therefore not as planned out in advance as we would normally like.

💡 Learnings: We are beginners to Figma, so we are constantly about how to use it to work through the design process. We think today’s experience really showed us what to prioritize (communication & detailed planning before beginning designing) in future timed settings. We also took care not to Design for the I this project, and decided on our solution after significant brainstorming and secondary research.

💡 What’s next: Refining the hi-fi to have the most consistent and visually appealing styles, adding pages we planned but did not get to (the stress is high).
